There comes a time in everyone’s life where you just can’t sit still anymore. I have arrived at that place.
Like many of you, my heart is crushed at the sheer numbers of Ukrainian refugees looking for shelter. The task of providing for these people, mostly women/children, is monumental. No one person could ever possibly solve all of this heartache. But one person… YOU… can help one child or one family. And I’m asking for your help.
In mid March, 2022, I met with the director of the Red Cross, and the Cologne emergency services manager about what they need to help the refugees arriving into Cologne. After our conversation I had the idea we could prepare backpacks for a boy or a girl with many of the necessity items the Red Cross needs. I asked them if this was a good idea, and the Director said to me… “when can you get me these bags and how many can you provide?” With that, Operation BackPack4Kids was born.
– William Vaughan, Founder Of Operation BackPack4Kids
We ask our local communities across the USA to build backpacks, then we transport them to Europe. We’ve partnered with multiple relief agencies to rapidly deliver the bags directly to refugee children in Germany, Poland, and now within the Ukraine borders. Our pilots volunteer at these locations on their days off and during layovers, procuring needed items, building backpacks, and handing out backpacks directly.
As the operation rapidly expands we are seeking multiple avenues to get the backpacks, “across the pond.” We’ve partnered with FedEx for our first bulk shipment of backpacks and look forward to many more.
In Louisville, KY, using money donated, we are hosting a, “Build a Backpack Day.” This will consist of a group of volunteers buying supplies (in bulk) and assembling backpacks right in Louisville. We will then use our shipping partners to transport and distribute the bags to refugees across Europe. The “Build a Backpack Day,” will be announced once a date is finalized.
Flying the bags across the Atlantic Ocean is a significant bottle neck in our operation. We’ve quickly realized the most efficient way to get backpacks to refugees is to source the bags and necessary supplies in Europe. This allows us to run the operation in more of a “just-in-time,” format, which also gives us the versatility to run it in multiple cities. People who are not able to donate a backpack can still take part in this and contribute by donating to our operation. Other than a few negligible fees we have very little operational or administrative costs. Every dollar donated goes directly into the operation of making and delivering backpacks.
